3 Keys for Winning College Scholarships

“Almost any student can win college scholarships,” says Dale Clifton, The Scholarship Doctor. Clifton, a former national scholarship judge for two major corporations points out that qualifying is the number one key. Most students wait too long to get involved with the scholarship process and end up qualifying for only two or three awards. Dale has interviewed dozens of students who found out what they needed to do early and became eligible for hundreds of scholarships by their senior year.

The second key is to get started early. Don’t procrastinate. Clifton says,” Most scholarship committees look for students to have performed well in the three basic areas of academics, community service and leadership. It is not necessary to have an “A” average. Many scholarships start with a GPA in the “C” range.” But, community service and leadership may require proof of commitment from the freshman through senior years.”

The third important key is for a student to discover what his/her leadership style might be. Some might lead by example, and others with a take charge emphasis. Another way is to lead by committee. Let everyone have a say so in the decision making process. Becoming an officer in a school club or organization can also show leadership.

Leadership and community service can sometimes be combined. Possibilities would include starting and running a food, clothing or shoe locker. Clifton says,” Students who really want to be noticed should choose just one or two volunteer activities for their high school careers. Scholarship committees love to see this type of devotion.”

Why have leadership and community service replaced extra-curricular activates and athletics as basic qualifiers? Clifton notes, “Fifteen years ago, companies started getting serious about sponsoring awards. They made qualifications the same as they desired in their employees. Companies wanted employees to get involved in their local communities. The importance of community service has been recognized and made part of the curriculum by many school corporations.
